The profession of career services began early in the 20th century with the paradigm of vocational guidance to match individuals to occupational types whom they resemble. At mid-century a second paradigm emerged, one focused on education and coaching to help individuals develop careers in stable organizations. At the beginning of the 21st century a third paradigm has emerged to address career construction in a rapidly changing society. It involves helping individuals listen to their own life stories to make career choices that are meaningful to them and matter to society. This presentation will describe a model, methods, and materials that encourages students and clients to use autobiographical narratives to design their lives and make the best available career choices.
