My life’s work has not been possible without the selfless contributions of U.S. Muslims. If it were not for a Muslim professor, I would have never fallen in love with knowledge. If it were not for an Islamic organization in New Mexico, I would have never been able to study my country. If it were not for a Muslim businessman in Hollywood, I could be buried in debt. If it were not for a Muslim doctor in Washington, DC, I could have a mangled face. And if it were not for a Muslim doctor in Hollywood, I may not even be alive. Quite simply, Muslims are part of who I am and who I wish to be. They are my past and they are my future. They are my family, my mentors, my role models, my friends, and most importantly - my brothers & sisters in humanity. This speech was part of an event featuring Dalia Mogahed, the Executive Director of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU). I spoke after Dalia’s inspiring speech.
