📕 My fourth book, "Making Sense of Division," is available at https://MathFluency.com 🍎 Watch my TED Talk at • Math isn't hard, it's a language | Randy P... 🔑 Key Ideas in Division 09 – Multi-digit Quotients – Dividing by 5 In Lesson 9, students divide three-digit and four-digit dividends by 5, resulting in multi-digit quotients. In Part 1, students write out the first ten multiples of 5 (students have already memorized the fives from the Multiplication Fluency book). They may use this list so they can focus on divisibility and on building fluency with the division procedure. Students should also remember that when dividing by 5, the remainder will always be less than 5. This will help them check their logic as they divide. In Part 2, students complete five division problems. They may use their Magic Card to keep their place values lined up properly and to reduce visual clutter. The word problem in Part 2 is based on one of the five division problems. This gives students practice interpreting what the quotient means in a division problem (including what the remainder means). In Part 3, students practice five more division problems. This can be completed in class or used as homework.
