The Holden Torana A9X, introduced in 1977, was a homologation special that quickly became one of Australia's most legendary racing cars. Built upon the LX Torana platform, it featured significant enhancements over its predecessors, most notably a redesigned front end to improve aerodynamics and a sophisticated rear-axle assembly. The A9X was powered by the robust 5.0-litre (308 cubic inch) V8 engine, but it was the chassis modifications—including disc brakes on all four wheels and a heavy-duty Salisbury differential—that truly set it apart. These engineering refinements were specifically geared towards endurance racing, giving the A9X a significant edge in braking, handling, and durability, which was critical for events like the Bathurst 1000. The A9X's racing prowess was nothing short of dominant, carving an indelible mark in Australian motor-sport history. Its debut at the 1977 Hang Ten 400 at Sandown saw Peter Brock immediately put it on the top step of the podium, a clear signal of its formidable capabilities. However, its most famous triumphs came in the 1978 and 1979 touring car seasons. Brock, driving the iconic Marlboro Holden Dealer Team A9X, secured a spectacular victory at Bathurst in 1978, followed by an even more crushing performance in 1979 where he, along with co-driver Jim Richards, won the Bathurst 1000 by an astonishing six-lap margin, and set the fastest lap on the very last lap of the race. This unprecedented dominance cemented the A9X's reputation as one of the greatest Australian touring cars ever built, a testament to its advanced design and the driving talent it attracted.
