Today we’re honoring one of the true giants in American traditional tattoo history: Paul Rogers. Born in 1905, Rogers became a legend not only for his tattooing but for his unmatched skill in building and refining tattoo machines. His innovations, including the cut-back liner, set the gold standard for traditional tattooing. From his apprenticeship under Cap Coleman, to co-founding Spaulding & Rogers Manufacturing with Huck Spaulding, Rogers’ influence is still felt in every tattoo shop today. His flash, his machines, and his dedication to the craft shaped generations of artists and helped bring tattooing from the fringes into the mainstream. Want to explore more of Paul Rogers’ legacy? The Tattoo Archive offers excellent books on Rogers and collections of his flash.
