Does India have any Scientific heritage from Ancient times, particularly in Chemistry? Did ancient Indians show a pragmatic approach toward Chemistry? Was the atomic theory of Acharya Kaṇāda scientific or it was purely speculative metaphysics? Was there any connection between Sanskrit and the Mendeleev Periodic table? Are the ancient texts religious or do they contain Science? Is everything from the past full of superstition and now attempts are being made to prove they are scientific? Is the 'Indian Knowledge System (IKS)' pseudoscience? Or have motivated individuals suppressed and downplayed India's earlier successes and contributions? Lots of such questions have been answered by an appropriate expert in this field. This video goes into detailed accounts of our past contribution to Science, particularly in the field of Chemistry (Rasayansastra) with brief examples from Health Science (Ayurveda), and Metallurgy (Dhātu vijñāna). About the speaker: Dr. V. Ramanathan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at IIT(BHU) Varanasi. Earlier he worked as a Senior Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry at SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. He was a past member of the Indian National Young Academy of Science and is a Fulbright Scholar. He has postdoctoral fellowships from the Third Institute of Physics at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, the University of Basel in Switzerland, and the Seoul National University in South Korea. He has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from IIT Kanpur. Laser spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, imaging, and computational chemistry are some of his areas of interest in the study. Ancient Indian Chemistry, the Scientific Heritage of India, Indology, Sanskrit, and Carnatic music are some of the other fields of his interest.
