HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) - Deacon Paul McCarty with Front Street Church of God in Hamilton says the church is one of the more than 100 to respond to an offer from Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones for free concealed carry and security training. McCarty has been with the church for about seven years. He watched the news about the deadly shooting in a Texas church the Sunday after Christmas. "It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking. You know, people just want to come to church and worship and go back home. You just want to come to church and just feel safe," McCarty said. McCarty is thankful for the sheriff's offer. He thinks all churches should have some type of security team. "It's really sad that it's come to this, in this day and age that you just have to have somebody or someone or something [in place] because you just never know [what could happen]. You just always want to be prepared for the what-ifs. You just want to be prepared," McCarty said. Jones also saw the video of the armed parishioner shooting and killing the gunman. Despite the quick action, two people were shot and killed at the service near Fort Worth. "In 15 minutes, the police will get there, but in 15 minutes, a lot of people are going to die. In Texas, five, six seconds and the shooter was killed," Jones said. Jones is offering up free concealed carry and security training to any local church that wants it. It's not just churches; he'll help any local religious organization that wants it. "It's a sad time when you have to be prepared to take weapons in a place of worship, no matter what type of church or religious organization it is, and you can't go and pray and worship and have your beliefs," Jones said. Jones says any time he talks with religious leaders, he tells them to have a security plan in place. "It's really sad that you have to go to this level, but you have no choice," Jones said. Jones says the church must agree to the training. Someone can’t just say they want the training because they’re part of a church. Ohio law says it's up to individual churches whether it wants to allow guns in the buildings.
