The Urab Dancers of Poruma showcase traditional dance & songs unique to Poruma. The Torres Strait Islands: A Celebration opening weekend (Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 July) centred around a coming together of the community & the general public to enjoy performances, workshops, talks, food, culture & exhibitions highlighting the rich traditions & contemporary culture of the Torres Strait. Visiting artists & groups from the Torres Strait performed alongside local community groups & contemporary performers to produce a diverse & engaging series of events across the Cultural Centre precinct. 'Land, Sea & Sky' at GoMA embraces the cultural & practical significance of land, sea & sky to Torres Strait Islander people & its influence on their art. The exhibition celebrates the unique & diverse contemporary art from the Islands, & includes dance objects, prints, film, video, textiles, ceramics & installations drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery's significant collection of works by Torres Strait Islander artists as well as key loans & commissioned works. The exhibition reinforces cultural knowledge for Islanders & presents their rich & complex cultures to broader audiences, including performance & oral history. It is an all-encompassing exhibition, representing different island groups as well as mainland & urban groups. Works by more than 40 artists, including major commissions of exciting new works, & loans from both important public & private collections across Australia are on display.
