Welcome, international audience! I'm the Donspektor and I like to review audio stuff from time to time. Normally in German, because there aren't too many german headphone/IEM reviewers and even less, if one subtracts the "omg it's an AirPod! It's awesome!" reviews. And this is my second review in English after the D10s I reviewed the last time ( • ISN Audio D10 Review, V-antastic or o-V-er... . So after I did like the D10s and their "more" approach compared to the similar tuned Tin T4, now I'm looking at the ISN Audio H40, which comes with 3 BAs and 1 dynamic, instead of only one dynamic of the D10. To sum it up, I REALLY do like the H40. Its main trait, in my opinion, is the overall very smooth presentation, without lacking too many details in any region. I would even go so far and say, it's one of the best allrounders you can get for around 200$. I would say the weakest point it has is the detail-retrieval in the treble. Don't misunderstand me, it still does a good job in that, while being crisp yet smooth. But I sometimes feel like it could be a bit better. On the upside: it extends well and I never had the feeling of "missing air" in the two Months I daily drove it. A small point of critic would also be the bass, which is smooth and punchy, lets the lower mids enough "room to breath" (which I did criticize at the D10) but I would like to "see" more texture instead of punch. Extension here is good, not like the D10, which did produce awesome sub-bass, but definitively better than most IEMs in the 100-200$ region I have heard. Mids are great, very good detail-retrieval without being sharp or "unsmooth", definitively the "star of the show" here (while not being A-shape). Imaging, layering and the soundstage are fantastic. Not "super-wide" fantastic, but super-deep fantastic: from vocals directly in the centre to single harp sounds far on the outside. There are at least 3 more like 5 points, where sound can happen between your ears and at least 4 more points outside your ears. In summary, I would really recommend this IEM, if you are after a smooth and really loooooong wearable IEM, that doesn't necessarily fit the description "neutral", while also not being noticeable V-shape. It doesn't deliver the best highs or lows in its price-class, isn't build as good as other devices for 200$ BUT... it does perform well to awesome in EVERY GENRE. From Casiopea, over Linking Park, Iron Maiden, Interstellar or Bladerunner Soundtrack to Nier Automata, Transistor or Dark Synth e.g. Nightcrawler or Replicant. It does work. Every. Time.
