Major General Eric Olson visited Cobra base in south west Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. Olson attended a ceremony to award a US soldier with a 'cobra medal' before he shared a traditional US thanksgiving meal with troops. He told US troops at the base, "this is where the Taliban was born" and "not far from here was where the plot was hatched to attack our nation on September 11, 2001". The United States has around 18-thousand troops in Afghanistan, most of them in the south and east of the country where insurgents, including followers of the former Taliban government, are strongest.
