Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) Russian Rhapsody in E Minor Composed in 1891; premiered in 1891 in Moscow Performed by Lilya Zilberstein (b. 1965), piano; and Alexander Mogilevsky (b. 1977), piano Recorded live June 2009 at the Lugano Festival, Auditorio Stelio Molo 0:00 Moderato – Cadenza – Vivace – Meno mosso 4:18 Andante – Con moto – Tempo I (meno mosso) Composed in January 1891, when Rachmaninoff was just 18 years old, the Russian Rhapsody is a vigorous and youthful work for two pianos. Despite its title, it’s more accurately described as a set of variations on a theme, rather than a free-form rhapsody. Rachmaninoff conceived it as a collaborative piece to perform with his cousin Alexander Siloti (1863-1945), and it reflects both his early virtuosity and his grounding in Russian melodic idioms. Though not widely performed today, it offers a glimpse of the composer’s emerging voice and his flair for dramatic keyboard writing.
