Despite its title, it’s more accurately described as a set of variations on a theme, rather than a free-form rhapsody. Rachmaninoff conceived it as a collaborative piece to perform with his cousin Alexander Siloti (1863-1945), and it reflects both his early virtuosity and his grounding in Russian melodic idioms. Though not widely performed today, it offers a glimpse of the composer’s emerging voice and his flair for dramatic keyboard writing.
