It is an afternoon in the city where the gray rain never ceases. The crumbled buildings stand on the streets like wet tombstones, and the deserted roads are filled only with puddles. Ellian raises the old metal shutter of the shop and flips a switch. With a low hum, the pink neon sign reading "OPEN" flickers on. This light is like the only beating pulse in this dead city. She tends to the flower pots out front, which grow surprisingly lush amidst the ruins. The rain-soaked petals glisten under the neon glow. Ellian dusts off her damp apron and sits on the small chair behind the counter. On the shelves, ownerless canned food and daily necessities are arranged neatly, without a speck of dust. Visitors are rare anyway. Often, the only customers are a stray cat or fallen leaves blown in by the wind. Yet, Ellian opens the shop again today. So that someone wandering these empty streets might see that light and feel relief. Or perhaps, simply to remain someone who has something to wait for tomorrow.
