J-MASS INSTAGRAM: @jmassofficial Join me as I explore one of the most unique abandoned spots in New England: Rutland Prison Camp, located in Rutland, Massachusetts. Today sits the former ruins of a prison that housed petty criminals, including thieves and drunkards, where they were put to work on farms--these included crop farming and dairy farming, among other things. The prison camp opened up for the first time in 1903, although it was abandoned over 30 years later in 1934 due to the site being directly above a water drainage area. While there are not too many intact buildings left behind, there are many minor remnants of the former prison camp, including two major structures still standing. This is my third time exploring the Rutland Prison Camp, and I ended up finding more about this place than I ever did before! From abandoned underground tunnels to a dark room inside a hill to a decrepit cell house, this area is teeming with abandoned wonders. This is an especially unique location due to the bizarre nature of the place's history...a prison camp where criminals farmed? Very weird. I would highly recommend checking out the Rutland Prison Camp for yourself, just be careful--the unpaved road to get here is very bumpy, with lots of loose rock and dirt.
