The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a leader in the science and engineering behind the development of fusion — a potentially limitless source of energy. The National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade is a spherical tokamak, a fusion device shaped more like a cored apple than the doughnut-like shape of conventional tokamaks. It’s the largest such device in the U.S., and designed to be the most powerful in the world. Its compact design makes it an ideal candidate to serve as the model for a fusion pilot plant followed by a commercial fusion reactor. Get a behind the scenes look at NSTX-U with Stefan Gerhardt, senior managing research physicist, and Jessica Guttenfelder, heating project engineer, as they share how NSTX-U operates and why it’s an important step forward to reliably generate cost-effective electricity from fusion energy. PPPL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory managed by Princeton University.
