[Expert] Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colomage (Director General of Institute of National Security, Sri Lanka) [GGI-JS International Experts Dialogue on Genocide] To discuss the critical issue of the law and facts behind the crime of genocide, Global Governance Institution (GGI-JS) held a virtual webinar on zoom on Tuesday, June 1st, from 8:00 AM – 9:40 AM EST (equivalent to 8:00 PM – 9:40 PM, Beijing Time). When lawyer Professor Raphael Lemkin coined the word ‘genocide’ and added it to the international legal system as an international crime in the 1940s, he would not have expected it to become a flashpoint in the 21st century. From the US’s condemnation of China regarding Xinjiang to the alleged genocide in Myanmar and Sudan, successful or not, all allegations of genocide have targeted non-western states. What are the difficulties and challenges for the application of the rules of international law on genocide? To what extent has the law and politics intertwined to shape the application of genocide in international law? Does an expanding use of the law really serve the purpose of establishing genocide in international law?
