Located on the Girona coast. It is the first town on the Costa Brava, which is why it is known as the "Portal de la Costa Brava". In Roman times it was called Blanda or Blandae. Its municipal term is 18.29 km². Blanes is also a well known tourist town within the Catalan and Spanish geography, where its coves and beaches surrounded by mountains make this place a very touristy place. One of the best coves is Santa Cristina. Blanes is located on the left of the alluvial plain that formed the mouth of the river Tordera , between the slopes of the Sierra Llarga and those of Montells. The municipality is crossed by the torrent of Blanes or Valdoric, which flows near Sa Palomera , a large rock that enters the sea and separates the bay of Blanes in the north and the beach of Sabanell in the south. The Costa Brava has its southernmost tip in this town, specifically in the rock of Sa Palomera. It is popularly said that the Costa Brava and its long beaches in the Maresme are born here. The city grew in the form of a semicircle that finds the borders in the hill of Sant Joan (puig de sant Joan) and in the sea, and therefore in the direction of the Tordera river. The traditional districts of Blanes are Sa Carbonera, Sant Francesc, the Turkeys and the Pines. 🔷Castell de Sant Joan de Blanes🔷 The San Juan tower (in Catalan, Sant Joan tower) is a Spanish fortification located on top of the San Juan hill in Blanes (Gerona). From there, at an altitude of 180 meters, you can contemplate a view of the city and the region of La Selva and, to the south, on clear days, you can see the silhouette of Mount Montjuic in Barcelona. The castle was built by order of Grau de Cabrera in the mid-13th century on an existing fortification. In the 16th century a watchtower was erected to dominate the panorama and watch out for corsairs and barbarian pirates of the Mediterranean. It was later sold to Francesc Montcada, Count of Aitona. 🔷Sa Palomera🔷 Sa Palomera, is a large rock that enters the sea and separates the Bay of Blanes, in the north, and the beach of Sabanell, in the south, within the municipality of Blanes (Gerona province, Spain). It is considered to be the starting point for the Costa Brava. Sa Palomera and the adjacent islets can be visited, since a viewpoint has been set up from which you can see a wide perspective of the town and the delta of the Tordera River that flows about 2 kilometers below, following Sabanell beach. This promontory is part of the scene of the renowned Blanes Pyrotechnic Festival that is held every summer within the activities of the patriotic festivities in honor of Saints Santa Ana and San Joaquín (July 26). In front of this mound there is a metallic arch with an inverted “v” shape that symbolizes the door and welcomes the Costa Brava.
