Northern Ireland is emerging from a period of conflict and the cataclysmic mental health impact on the people, and on future generations is only now being recognised. In this talk Professor Siobhan O’Neill discusses her research and the evidence for the high rates of mental illness and suicidal behaviour here. Her vision is of a Northern Ireland where mental health is the priority, a society where children and families can flourish, and also achieve their dreams. A Professor of Mental Health Sciences at Ulster University, Siobhan coordinated the largest ever studies of mental health and suicide in Northern Ireland, highlighting the associations with the Troubles. Siobhan is now on a mission to promote evidence-based care for individuals, families and communities who suffer from the effects of mental illness. Her current research focuses on the impact of conflict on the next generation, including mental health and suicide prevention in schools and colleges, childhood adversities, and trauma informed practice. A single mum by choice, Siobhan still lives in her hometown of Derry with her two-year old daughter. @profsiobhanon This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
