Anxiety & Angst - "Tell Me About the Rabbits" ...

This video takes the widespread image of rabbits in popular culture ranging from Watership Down to the Playboy “bunny girls” and explores why the rabbit evokes so many psychological associations and images especially those to with feelings of anxiety and angst. Lacan uses the image of the rabbit to describe how the human psyche deals with reality and I show how Hollywood movies such as “Harvey” (1950) can illustrate Lacan & Freud’s theories on anxiety and angst in an accessible way. The rabbit is shown to be both vulnerable and weak as described by Phillip Larkin and Jacques Lacan, but also in such folk tales as Br'er Rabbit, a figure of rebellion and sly resistance.
