The Rolling Stones: The Lantern (Drum Cover)

From the infamous Their Satanic Majesties Request album, “The Lantern” is an often overlooked song in The Rolling Stones’ massive song catalog. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the song was released as the B-side to Bill Wyman’s “In Another Land”, released a week before the album. The lyrics talk about two lovers, one who has died and the other who is still alive yet still feels love for the other. The “lantern” in the song is what unites the two lovers after death. “The Lantern” was recorded in London’s Olympic Studios in the middle of 1967. The song follows the usual Stones lineup: Mick Jagger on lead vocals, Keith Richards on backing vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, Bill Wyman on bass, and Charlie Watts on drums. Multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones plays the Mellotron and the song’s organ part which can be heard in the intro and middle sections of the song. Frequent Stones collaborator Nicky Hopkins performs the song’s impressive piano part. There is also a brass section heard in the song. The drum part for this song may be some of Charlie's best playing. It’s all fills. Charlie was never a flashy drummer, but there were some moments where he just let it all out and this is one of those moments. A fantastic drummer who is greatly missed. The fills remind of Ringo’s work on Revolver up to Magical Mystery Tour. Very similar to what Ringo plays on “She Said She Said” and “Strawberry Fields Forever.” The stereo mix of the song has the drums panned hard left but they seem buried in the mix. You can hear the drums the best in the mono mix which is the mix I used for this video. I used a similar technique I used for my Strawberry Fields video. I isolated the drum track using the Moises.ai application and then transcribed each fill onto a piece of paper that I used for practice. While not as hard as SFF, it still proved to be a great challenge. Overall, I’m happy with the final product. I believe this is the only drum cover of this song on YouTube, and on the internet in general. I couldn’t find a video on it anywhere. One of my favorites from my favorite album! Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy it!
