RIP: MALC Summer holidays, 1972, just before the big exodus of Henry Fanshawe ‘talent’ to universities and colleges around the country. Messrs Hattersley, Roper and Clarke set off on an epic journey by road from Dronfield to Athens. This was going to be an amazing holiday, but I’d just woken up on the day we travel to London, and my tickets haven’t arrived! Yes, I need to travel to Sheffield first thing to get the National coach to London. It’s hard to believe what it was like in those days and how easy the process is today. I set off at the crack of dawn and jogged around our estate to try and find the postman. I was hoping he had all the documents I needed. Well, suddenly……there he was. I’d found him somewhere on Stonelow Road, and yes, he did have the tickets! Phew, what a relief! I got the bus to Sheffield and met John and Malc there, ready to board the coach to London. From London we set off for Athens on a Sunsearchers’ 18-seater holiday minibus that was totally full. After camping overnight in Salzburg, one of us must have been brave enough to make the decision that we’d had enough of the bus journey, and we alighted in Kavala. The driver dropped us at a bus stop next to a taverna which was on the beach. We waited ages for a bus, but alas, nothing came! We went around to have a look at the taverna and were beckoned by a large group of fishermen who were having breakfast after an early start to work. ‘Ελα, ελα’ was the call as they shouted us over and proceeded to let us join them at their table. How about this for a first impression of this beautiful country! We caught a bus afterwards and headed to a campsite on the lovely island of Thasos. Why am I telling you this story now? Well, the song I have just recorded and shared here and dedicated to Malc, is one I remember (the only one actually) that was played very loudly every morning for the whole campsite to hear. I loved it. Of course it’s an Emerson, Lake & Palmer song, but I hope you like this version too! Ian 21/11/2025
