The cinema organ was known in its heyday as a 'unit orchestra' since one player and instrument could produce sounds as rich and varied as a complete orchestra. The Compton organ featured in this video has an especially wonderful palette of sounds. Originally built in 1935 for the Astoria Cinema Southend and now at Wyton House, it has 16 ranks of pipes, plus tuned and untuned percussion, and even a Bechstein grand piano, all played from the 4 manual console. Below each of the three lower manuals are 10 thumb pistons, used to quickly select different combinations of sounds. This video records what sounds each of these pistons selected on one day in 2014 and the names of the stops that produced these sounds. Of course these 30 sounds just scratch the surface of what the Compton can do and on another day the pistons may be set to produce a completely different set of sounds. Organist: Stephen Ades
