In this exploration, I head off the beaten path to locate and document a remarkable Timucua Shell Ring Mound. Unlike standard shell middens, these circular formations are unique archaeological footprints that offer a glimpse into the lives, ceremonies, and daily habits of the indigenous people who thrived in this landscape for thousands of years. Tucked away near the floodplains is a massive, ancient shell ring mound. Unlike typical shell middens, this one has a hollow center and a distinct circular shape. Standing on top of these shell layers, you can really feel the history of the Native American Indians who hunted, camped, and built these structures over hundreds of years. It’s a powerful reminder of Florida’s long and diverse history. This site dates back hundreds, if not thousands, of years and was once home to groups like the Timucua and later the Seminole Indians. We take a close look at the layers of shells that make up this mound and discuss how the landscape might have looked to those who lived here generations ago. About the Ocala National Forest Established in 1908, the Ocala National Forest is the southernmost forest in the continental United States and the oldest east of the Mississippi River. Known for its "hidden" rivers and over 600 lakes and springs, this forest has provided resources for human inhabitants for over 10,000 years.
