Hiking and Camping in Great Sand Dunes National Park | sand & snow

A hike and night camping in the Great Sand Dunes Wilderness Area in Colorado, USA. As the only backcountry permit holders that day, we had the dunes to ourselves. While the winter storm likely kept other visitors away, our ascent was made easier by the frozen dunes providing more sure footing. The temperature dropped to 14 F / -10 C the first night as we camped ~900m south of Star dune. However, with wind chill we estimated ~4 F / -15C. We awoke to the pre-dawn sky, with calm winds and a fresh blanket of snow over the dunes. Our descent was like walking through a dream.
