A visit to Gloucester Docks, covering some of the history but mainly looking for what remains. Gloucester was granted port status in 1580 but back then cargo was discharged onto the river bank, it wasn't until the Gloucester to Sharpness canal was dug in the mid 1800's that the dock as we see it today was built. The main reason for building the canal and dock was to avoid the treacherous River Severn with its shifting sand banks and strong currents, business had been conducted up the Severn for millennia and the canal now made it a lot safer and reliable and Gloucester became the farthest inland port in the country. The warehouses on the north of the dock were among the first to be built and they then became the template for others as they were added. The film takes a look at some of the administration areas where access to the docks was strictly controlled and the business of the dock was conducted. The success of the dock as a port is perhaps shown by the number and close proximity of the warehouses as they crowd around the main basins. Today the Gloucester Quays Retail outlet Shopping center is still bringing buyers and sellers into the area carrying on the tradition of trade from this port dating from the days of its conception back in the 1800's
