Susan Rothenberg at SPERONE WESTWATER Juanita McNeely at JAMES FUENTES

James Kalm rolls onto the Bowery and brings viewers along for a couple of walking tours of painting exhibitions (so what else is new?). Kalm begins with a look at Susan Rothenberg’s new paintings and works on paper. Rothenberg achieved rapid critical recognition after a seminal show at the alternative space 112 Greene Street in 1975. Debuting her signature subject of horses on monochrome fields, the artist was tagged as a precursor of the “New Image” painters. Within a few short years a “return to painting” was receiving considerable institutional support. Now forty years on, Rothenberg is still working and developing her unique vision of figuration and it’s relevance to her environment in New Mexico. Drifting further east, we stroll through two installation works by Feminist pioneer Juanita McNeely. These huge multi panel pieces display a withering anxious approach to political and gender based subjects, accomplished with rich paint handling and a vibrant pallet. “Triskaidekaptych” is a wall wrapping mural that was finished in 1986. “Is It Real? Yes, It Is!” also a multi-panel work delves into the issue of abortion, which was still illegal when it was completed in 1969. A musical introduction is provided by James Smith. This program was recorded January 26, and February 6, 2020.
