Les Cloches de Genève is a work taken from the first year of Franz Liszt's année des Années de pèlerinage: La Suisse. Collection which would undoubtedly have as a preface another small collection of three pieces, Apparition (1834). This first year "suisse" evokes Liszt's stay in this country 20 years earlier with Marie d'Agoult. Dedicated to his first daughter Blandine (1835-1862), this piece is accompanied by a quote from Byron taken from Childe Harold: “I do not live in myself, but I become part of what surrounds me”. The first part of this piece is a song like a lullaby, where the notes are strung out, reminiscent of a distant chime. The second part, Cantabile con moto, is a kind of hymn to life with a progressive amplification by the use of octaves, the melody recalling the regular swinging of the bell by its binary construction (2/4) and the notes accented every two measures. It reaches its climax in an Animato FF passage, then finds a gradual calm by rediscovering the chords of three sounds scattered as at the beginning of the piece.
