(24 Sep 2014) Clashes between Islamic State forces and Kurdish YPG (People's Protection Units) fighters continued on Wednesday close to the Turkish-Syrian border, as the IS group tried to advance in the region towards the Syrian city of Kobani. Locals from the village of Karaca watched the clashes take place from the top of a hill on the Turkish side of the border. "Islamic State tanks and vehicles entered Boban Village on the Syrian side. They shelled the place with tanks and mortars. We could hear them falling on those hills," said Halil Aslan, a local villager. Refugees have been flooding into Turkey from Syria since last Thursday, escaping an Islamic State group offensive that has pushed the conflict within sight of the Turkish border. Turkey's deputy prime minister said on Monday that some 130-thousand Syrian refugees had reached Turkey in the preceding five days, fleeing the advance of Islamic State extremists, and warned the number could rise further as the militants press ahead with an onslaught. The al-Qaida breakaway group - which says it wants to establish an Islamic state, or caliphate, ruled by a harsh version of Islamic law in territory it captured straddling the Syria-Iraq border - has in recent days advanced into Kurdish regions of Syria that border Turkey.
