Woodturning: Birdhouse Ornament

Today's project is a birdhouse ornament that you can make from scrap pieces of wood you might have in your shop! I happened to have a few pieces of scrap pieces of bubinga and maple in my scrap pile. Anything you have that is around 2" x 2" and the length will depend on what shape you make. You can make anything from a acorn shape or a birdhouse with a long or short finial. I started with a piece of 2" x 2" x 6" piece of bubinga for the bottom and a 3" cubed piece of maple for the top. I mounted the bottom piece between centers and made it round using the roughing gouge. Next I mounted the piece in a chuck and drilled an 1 1/2" hole 1 1/2" deep. The little birds need a place to get into the birdhouse so I drilled a 3/4" hole in the side of the bubinga bottom. I used the 1/2" bowl gouge to shape the bottom and then it was time for sanding. I sanded it from 150 to 600 followed by sanding sealer, Acks Abrasive Paste, and Acks Polishing Paste. Now for the top. I rounded it with the roughing gouge and then shaped it with the 1/2" bowl gouge. To dress it up a little more, I used a piece of guitar string to burn in a few lines. I sanded and applied the same finish to the top as I did the bottom. Next I glued the top to the bottom and added a little post for the birds to sit on and voila.....I had a completed birdhouse ornament! I hope you enjoy this video.
