A native Arizonan, Roger Clyne's music embodies the true spirit of life in the Sonora Desert. Since 1996, when his former band, The Refreshments, released their major debut album "Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy," Clyne has been touring the world, sharing the rock n' roll sound of the American Southwest. Jarrett Bellini - also a native Arizonan - sat down with Roger before a recent show at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta to talk about growing up in the Grand Canyon State, the history of tequila, and much more. (Special Note by Jarrett) Early in the interview, we discuss our mutual pride for Arizona. However, in the interest of time, I did edit out an earlier portion of that discussion where I describe my conflicted feelings about that word. Pride. Specifically, when it comes to geography. I was simply born in Arizona. I was born in the Unites States. I was born into whatever life benefits they allow. But I just as easily could've been born into a slum of some third world, war-torn country. (Or The Netherlands, which probably would've been pretty kick ass. I'd definitely would be taller.) So, I always struggle when it comes to this kind of pride. Where you were born is purely circumstance - for better or for worse. Pride is earned. Nevertheless, geography is part of what defines us. And growing up in the Arizona desert is a part of who I am. Just like Roger, I have strong emotions from that experience. I just don't know what else to call it ... other than pride. Please consider sharing this video with someone you know from Arizona. They'll understand.
