(15 Mar 1995) Natural Sound A bomb in Turkey killed one person and injured three others, one critically, during a demonstration last night. (Tuesday). The explosion occurred in the troubled Ali Bey Kay district of Istanbul, when a petrol bomb was thrown at a car, filled with innocent passers-by. The burnt out shell of a car in the district of Ali Bey Kay is an all too grim reminder of the violent religious struggle plaguing the country. One man was killed in the explosion, and three injured - one critically. The blast occurred in the Ali Bey Kay area, which has in the past 48 hours been the scene of violent attacks. Despite a curfew issued by police in the neighbourhood, tension continues to mount between rival Muslim groups. Last night, it spilled onto the street. It's believed police were trying to disperse a crowd who were protesting at heavy handed tactics used against 25 people who were killed during a demonstration on Monday. The protests were sparked by deadly clashes between rival Muslim groups. It's unclear whether the petrol bomb was thrown inside the car or at it, but the result was devastating. The victims were apparently in the area visiting friends. Passers by, also injured by the force of the bomb were taken to the Gazio Osmon Pasa Hospital, shocked and exhausted. Tension flared in the Istanbul suburb, when on Sunday, two people from the Alawite sect were gunned down in a coffee shop. Friction has intensified between the Alawite sect of Islam that supports a secular system, and the radical Muslim Sunni groups who advocate strict Islamic rule.
