A no-start/no-crank situation (turn the key and absolutely nothing happens) can be due to the shift cable linkage bushing being worn and not returning the transmission into Park. When this happens the Neutral Safety Switch prevents the starter from turning. This can be sometimes mistaken for an issue with the starter motor or with the ignition switch. Be sure to try shifting into neutral to check for start. If this is the issue, a quick fix is to replace the bushing at the end of the cable on the gear selection lever. This is far easier and quicker and cheaper than replacing the entire shift linkage cable. Replacement bushings for various vehicles are available online and may be available at some parts stores. This video shows some of these bushings and how to perform the repair by disassembling the center console on a Toyota Highlander. Watch for how to disassemble and remove the center console and access the shifter. This same issue occurs on many other Toyota/Lexus vehicles like Sienna or Corolla or RAV4 or Lexus RX300. This issue is very common on all older vehicles - it's just a matter of time before the original shift linkage bushing rots away, leaving you stuck. Do you need work done on your car?
