CELPIP Writing Task 2 | How to make your template | Maintenance options

In this video, we're looking at a CELPIP writing task 2 sample answer and we're going to be developing a template. the question that we're going to be looking at is this one: Your apartment building is getting old, and the owners of the building are planning to do some renovations this summer. They've decided to conduct a survey to see what the tenants would like to have improved this year. Which option would you prefer? So would you prefer option a - new paint and carpets, or would you prefer option b - a new elevator When you're preparing a response for the survey, you need to think of an opinion essay. So you're going to need an introduction where you paraphrase the question, identify your preference, and give two reasons that you're going to talk about. Then you'll have your main idea which is the first reason, your second main idea which is your second reason, and then you'll have a conclusion. So, for an introduction you might say something like this: ‘Thank you for including me in your survey to identify your tenants renovation preferences. Personally, I would prefer to replace the elevator rather than repainting and recarpeting. The main reasons for my preference are safety and convenience. You can see in that introductory paragraph that we've got a paraphrase of the question, then we've got our opinion, and then we've identified these two main reasons of safety and convenience. Now we're going to develop the first of those two reasons ‘safety’. So we say: In terms of safety I feel that the existing elevator breaks down far too often. Out of order notices are posted on the door at least once a week, and that's too much. What would happen if people were in the elevator when it broke down? Not everyone's level-headed, and someone who doesn't handle stress well could easily end up having a heart attack. What we've done in that main idea is we've identified that first reason, we've explained what that first reason is, and then we've given our example. Now we do exactly the same thing with our second main idea. Moreover it's highly inconvenient to have an unreliable elevator especially for residents who live on the ninth and 10th floors. Several times now I've had to help some of the older residents carry their groceries up all those flights of stairs. We've followed the same pattern again. We've identified that second reason and then we've given an explanation of what that reason is, and then an example of the problem it creates. Now we write our conclusion where we summarize our reasons. I believe my preference is shared by almost everyone in the building and hope that steps can be taken to deal with this unsafe and inconvenient elevator issue even if you, as owners, initially decide to go ahead with the paint and carpet upgrades. So there we are with our unsafe and inconvenient those same two reasons that we said we were going to talk about in the introduction that we developed in our two paragraphs and now in our conclusion we reiterate. Keep in mind that when you're providing these suggestions you need to be using the second conditional because you have no control over what these building owners decide. You're just making a suggestion, and when you're making a suggestion and have minimal control, you must use the second conditional. There are five things to remember 1. identify your two reasons in the introduction it gives you a very very strong thread throughout your essay. 2. elaborate on the two main ideas that you've introduced in the paragraphs 3. use the second conditional because you're making a suggestion and have minimal control over the outcome 4. follow a clear structure. Have your introduction where you paraphrase the question, offer two examples, and give your opinion. a main paragraph that you identify your idea explain it and give an example. another paragraph where you identify the second main idea give an explanation and an example, and then a conclusion where you reiterate those two main ideas 5. Last but not least, leave a line space between each section of your essay. Introduction, line space, main idea, line space, main idea, line space, conclusion.
