The Arabian landscape is a nearly waterless desert where animals endure extreme heat, but for three months each year, a remote region on the southwest coast transforms into a lush oasis. In June, the land is dry, with dromedary camels surviving on sparse vegetation and male weaver birds weaving nests. By July, warm monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean bring mist, turning the area into a green paradise that attracts invertebrates, feeding predatory birds. The rains trigger the breeding season for endemic Dhofar toads, while female weavers choose mates and lay eggs. By August, dry river valleys fill with rainwater, and rock hyraxes become prey for Verreaux eagles, while Arabian chameleons use their color-changing abilities to evade danger. As September arrives, the rains lessen, the sun shines, and hyrax pups emerge, but as the greenery dries, the herds of camels disperse, waiting for the return of the rains next year.
