"The operation on enforcing peace in Georgia was stopped not because President Bush demanded it," Sergey Lavrov told journalists in Moscow. "But because we reached the goals, which our president had set for this operation." His comments come as the concept of having both sides retreat to their original positions ran into the stark reality of Russian dominance on the battlefield and their intention to capitalise on that in any negotiations. "There will be no principle changes in the issues of peacekeeping on the South Ossetian territory. The only changes will concern Georgian peacekeepers, who were part of the peacekeeping troops, but turned out to be traitors and cowards and fired at their companions in arms," Lavrov said. "They will not appear in South Ossetia as part of peacekeeping forces." Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's had already insisted on Tuesday that Russian forces would stay, despite Georgia wanting them to leave.
