Course author Suzanna Sifter demonstrates the different types of major and minor scales (pentatonic and blues) as well as their modes (Ionian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Phrygian, Dorian, Aeolian, and Locrian). You’ll also learn the correct fingerings to make your playing as fluid as possible. This course includes practice tips to make your practice sessions more engaging, as well as tips on how to translate your scales into music. Suzanna Sifter dives into the factors that make a good melody, and the ideal state of mind during improvisation. Scales are more important than may initially seem, she emphasizes, they teach you about harmony, chord types, tensions, and they also teach you the topography of the instrumentation, helping you feel more comfortable when moving around the keys. She holds a BM from Berklee and a Master’s Degree from New England Conservatory. Suzanna has released five recordings as a leader, composer, and arranger: “Flowers for You,” “Awakening,” “The Illumination,” “Sophisticated Lady,” and the play along CD to her book, “Berklee Jazz Keyboard Harmony: Using Upper Structure Triads.” The second edition of Suzanna’s book was released through Hal Leonard/Berklee Press in 2015.
