Just short of the nerve being exposed after removing a huge cavity on tooth #31 (lower right back molar), this patient returns a month later w/ persistent thermal sensitivity that lingers for ~15 sec. It's not getting any better or any worse for her... The greater auricular neck block using local anesthetic virtually eliminates her tooth hypersensitivity to cold ice water (FDH) down from a 6/10 to a 1/10 after the neck block! There was no injection of anesthetic in the mouth involving the trigeminal nerve. This chronic sensitivity pain on tooth #31 turned out to be lasting in her case and she wound up not needing a root canal thank goodness! There are times when a root canal problem can be avoided via understanding how the autonomic sympathetic inputs from the upper cervical spine influence certain teeth (especially lower back molars). This will not work on all cases of root canal problems, or in cases where the nerve is blatantly exposed.
