(19 Apr 1999) Russian/Nat The Russian Orthodox patriarch will fly to Belgrade on Tuesday on a peace mission and to hold talks with the Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic's brother confirmed to APTN on Monday. Borislav Milosevic, the elder brother of the Yugoslav leader and the republic's ambassador to Russia, held last minute talks on the eve of the meeting with Alexi II, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Borislav Milosevic, the Yugoslav president's brother, met the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Alexi II, at his Moscow residence. He was there to finalise plans for Alexi's return visit to Belgrade on Tuesday. Alexi plans to meet the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, patriarch Pavle, and may even speak with President Milosevic. Since the start of NATO's airstrikes against Yugoslavia, Alexi has urged the Western alliance and Belgrade to reach a peace agreement. He has constantly voiced his support for the Serbs' claim on Kosovo. They regard the province as the cradle of the Orthodox Slav state. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "He (the patriarch) is going there to meet the patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church Pavle. He is going there to support the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Yugoslav people and its leadership." SUPERCAPTION: Borislav Milosevic, Yugoslav ambassador to Russia The Russian patriarch will fly directly from Moscow to Belgrade on Tuesday. The Russian foreign ministry has been engaged in intensive talks to secure a safe air corridor for the cleric's plane. Sources in the Moscow Patriarchate had said they hoped NATO would suspend its airstrikes for the duration of Alexi's visit. SOUNDBITE (Russian): " His Holiness's mission is noble. It is inspired by his wish to search for peace. He is against war. He wants this aggression to stop. He wants to enable a peaceful resolution. He is aware there is no place for talks while the aggression is still taking place."
