Phoenix radio was going through some changes as we entered into the new decade of the 90's. KZZP's Bruce Kelly dominated the Phoenix morning airwaves for years. But when ratings slipped, and crosstown rival Y95's Morning Zoo with Tim Hattrick topped the Top 40 morning drive, Bruce Kelly was let go. But his unemployment was short lived as he was quickly hired to do mornings at Y95. Which is another WILD story for another time. Y95 (KOY FM) was changing. Dumping their rock music, but keeping the up beat sound. All the while the other CHR competitor Power 92 (KKFR) dropped their alternative top 40 songs to became more of a dance station. Back at KZZP,Bob Case from KUBE/Seattle became the new program director. He brought with him Chet Buchanan. Kevin Ryder left with Gene Baxter for KROQ in Los Angeles to do mornings as Kevin & Bean. sounded like in January of 1990. The KZZP line up on this aircheck is Valerie Knight, Doug Roberts (sitting in for Bob Chase), Chet Buchanan, Alex Santamaria, Jeff Stewart, and Dave Ryan doing mornings. Doug Roberts would soon leave as well to join his friends Kevin Ryder and Gene Baxter at KROQ. I recorded this in January of 1990. I too left KZZP and their sister station KRQ in Tucson to work at Y95, using the name Jimmy Z. It was Bruce Kelly's idea to change my name from Kidd Kelly to Jimmy Z because he didn't want two "Kelly"s working on Y95. More on that some other time. Footnote, I don't remember the two dates I recorded this. Only that it was January 1990.
