In this video from Reading Scripture Well, Dr. Tim Bertolet reflects on what biblical theology does—and does not do—when practiced faithfully. He clarifies common misunderstandings surrounding biblical theology, especially the tendency to ground interpretation in speculative historical reconstruction, critical methodologies that place human reason over Scripture, or approaches that detach biblical theology from the church’s historic confession of faith. Instead, biblical theology is rooted in the text of Scripture itself, receiving God’s own theological interpretation of redemptive history rather than reconstructing meaning behind or beneath the text. Dr. Bertolet explains that biblical theology, rightly practiced, upholds the authority of Scripture, the rule of faith, and the unity of the whole canon, while remaining fully compatible with classical theology and metaphysical reflection. Far from rejecting doctrinal categories such as God’s immutability or impassibility, biblical theology—when integrated with the church’s theological tradition—leads to conclusions that cohere with historic Christian orthodoxy. This approach avoids creating a “canon within a canon” and resists pitting Jesus against Paul or narrative against doctrine, instead reading every part of Scripture within the unfolding story of redemption that climaxes in Christ. Finally, this video highlights the pastoral and ecclesial purpose of biblical theology. By reading Scripture in light of the whole storyline, biblical theology strengthens preaching, teaching, discipleship, and missions, guarding against moralistic or individualistic interpretations and helping believers see how every passage fits within God’s redemptive plan. Biblical theology is not pursued for academic curiosity alone, but to build up the church, deepen confidence in Scripture, and help Christians read the Bible with clarity, faithfulness, and theological depth. #theology #biblicaltheology #ReadingScriptureWell #bibleinterpretation #hermeneutics #bible #biblestudies
