An overview of venlafaxine (Effexor, Effexor XR) and its active metabolite and FDA-approved medication in its own right, o-desmethylvenlafaxine, or desvenlafaxine (Pristiq). The parent drug differs from its metabolite only in that it is not so quite as potent at blocking the noradrenaline reuptake pump, but both SNRI molecules are more potent at blocking serotonin transporters at all doses (especially lower ones), regardless. Pristiq may also offer more stable plasma levels, due to differences in their pharmacodynamics.
