Mike Kaawa "Ua Noho Au A Kupa"

This past week presented me with a not-to-miss opportunity in the form of a very special guest artist. Mike and Malissa Kaawa took a break from the warmth and surf of O`ahu to spend a week with us in wintry Walnut Creek, and Mike and I spent a lot of that week shooting video and recording. Mike is renowned for his 12 string guitar stylings but he's also a fine vocalist with a wonderful and always expanding repertoire. I was honored to sit alongside and play slack key while he sang Edward Nainoa's romantic mele, "Ua Noho Au A Kupa." Mike is playing his trademark Ovation Adamas 12 string in drop D tuning. I'm using my Kim Walker OM in D Wahine tuning, (D A D F# A C#). We're playing into an Avantone CK40 multi-pattern large diaphragm stereo mic, set to XY with figure 8 mics for a classic Blumlein stereo array. Mike's vocal was captured using an Audio Technica AT3035. We tracked into an RME UFX and REAPER. I shot two Lumix GH4s for the video and edited the clip in Edius.
