AERODROME EMERGENCY – An Aerodrome emergency is a crisis situation due to an incident at the aerodrome which interrupts the regular operation. The types of aerodrome emergencies can be categorized as… • Aircraft Accidents and Incidents On and Off Airports within close proximity. • Security Threats (Bombs and Hijackings); • System and communication failures • Structural emergencies • Fire or threat of fire to infrastructure, vehicles, equipment • Dangerous Goods & Hazardous Material • Medical Emergencies • Natural Disasters including adverse weather • Airspace restrictions • Cyber security attacks Back in 1999, the federal aviation administration (FAA) introduced four phases of the comprehensive emergency management concept, which can be described as Prevention Preparedness Response Recovery The main objectives of an aerodrome emergency plan is to To save lives Reduce damage and loss; Assist the investigation; and Resume Normal Operation The emergency control centre The emergency control centre is a dedicated location that oversee matters only related to the emergency situation. The mobile command post The mobile command post is an on-site command centre which presents at the scene where the emergency take place and coordinates with the emergency control centre on the improvement of the emergency situation. Responding to an emergency incident comes with an extended planning and rehearsals in any aerodrome and the emergency response team plays a crucial part from the time the emergency declared till the closing of the incident. Communication, quick decision-making, rescue mission, first aid, emotional support, caregiving are a few of the multi-function roles, the response teams are trained. While no one wants to speak about disastrous events, it is important as aviation enthusiasts to be more familiar with the disaster management cycle. Although it may sound dramatic, the truth is that disaster management can be the difference between life and death for many of those who may be in the wrong place when the disaster strikes.
