Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the start of his first official visit to India, marking a historic bilateral engagement. The leaders held talks to strengthen India-Germany relations, covering trade, defence, technology, supply chains, and education. Both also participated in a CEO forum, attended by top executives from 25 German companies, reflecting strong economic cooperation. This visit highlights India’s growing significance in Germany’s foreign policy, with India-Germany trade surpassing $50 billion last year. More than 2,000 German companies operate in India, and around 750 Indian firms invest in Germany. Chancellor Merz will also visit Bengaluru to see the Indian Institute of Science and German engineering major Bosch, continuing discussions on skilled labour, migration, and defence collaboration.
