17 March 2023. Shantou. From Longhu District to Chaonan District—nearly an hour's drive. Touring eastern Guangdong with friends, soaking in Chaoshan's local culture. This time: Shantou. Place names tell stories. Mountains, rivers, seas, lakes. Animals, plants. Minerals. Local products. Dialect words. Folk deities. All of it, reflected in names. "Tuopu"—tuo means shark; this was once fishing grounds. "Yanhong"—salt. "Miancheng"—textiles. "Haimen," "Liantang," "Tongyu," "Jinzao"… Behind each name, this land's memory. ——— Shantou: mountains, sea, and a bay tunnel. Starting from Longhu—where it all began. 14 November 1981: Shantou Special Economic Zone established on 1.6 sq km of wasteland here . Once barren, now a bustling downtown.
