Irina Murakhovskaya, MD, Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York City, NY, discusses the findings of a study investigating the effect of obesity on the outcomes of patients with primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The study revealed that obese patients had lower platelet levels at diagnosis, were more likely to require therapy and needed more lines of treatment, and had worse overall outcomes in comparison to non-obese patients. These results suggest that addressing obesity could be beneficial for those patients. This interview took place at the 64th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition congress in New Orleans, LA.
