Malcolm was a standout at the University of Virginia. In Tony Bennett’s stout Packline Defense, Brogdon flourished and took home the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Defensive Player of the Year (an award previously won by the likes of Alonzo Mourning, Tim Duncan, Shane Battier, and Anthony Davis). In the history of the ACC, no player had ever won ACC Player of the Year (previously won by Ralph Sampson, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, and JJ Redick) AND the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in the same season until Brogdon did as a senior in 2015-16. He also went back to back as the ACC DPoY during his junior and senior seasons. That being said, you’d expect that he can defend at a high level, but his all-around game has been consistent throughout his first year in the league, all while being a second round draft pick. Brogdon lead all rookies in assists (4.2 apg), steals (1.12 spg), second in minutes averaged (26.4 mpg), assist to turnover ratio (2.81), 3 point percentage (40.4%), and just behind Rookie of the Year frontrunner Dario Saric’s 12.8 points per game with his own 10.2 ppg. The only rook with a triple-double on the year. All in 75 games for a playoff team. No other rookies besides Brogdon and the Celtics’ Jaylen Brown can list that they are a rotation player on a playoff team on their resume at this time. That’s what makes Brogdon such a strong candidate to win Rookie of the Year despite somehow never winning any Rookie of the Month awards. Also, when Malcolm told the Milwaukee Bucks that they should donate the money they were going to spend campaigning for RoY to charity, I knew I had to make this video.
