After the long transfer from Sesriem, we arrive in Lüderitz, a picturesque town on the south-west coast of Namibia with a small port overlooking the Atlantic. We have time for a long, relaxing walk. Founded in 1883 by the German shipowner Adolf Lüderitz, it became the first nucleus of the German protectorate of South-West Africa. Initially dedicated to fishing and port activities, the town experienced its heyday with the discovery of rich diamond deposits in 1908, which attracted thousands of fortune seekers. Today, with the mines exhausted, Lüderitz lives thanks to the port, fishing, oyster farming and tourism. Its charm lies in its clearly German-style architecture, including the Felsenkirche, the suggestive "church on the rocks", and in its atmosphere suspended between sea and desert. The quiet streets, the uncrowded seafront and the spectacular sunsets over the sea complete the picture of this unique location, a corner of Bavaria nestled between the dunes of the Namibian desert and the rushing waves of the Atlantic.
