Dunes so it made sense I just stayed in-state. I booked a hotel stay relatively close and was able to make it a "work" day prior to this show. Temperatures had dropped compared to the day before and Baltimore was hovering between 30-40 degrees. I showed up to the venue early to ask which door they'd use (yeah, they switch entrances depending on the show) for open and when I said I'd be back shortly, was invited to attend a screening of Xmas media consisting of TV and B-film sources at the upstairs bar, open to the public. Why the hell not? I got to stay warm and sucked down Natty Bos while being entertained until 8 p.m. Hammered Hulls were on a short tour with fellow D.C. natives, Clear Channel and I attended this show because I missed their record release party with Divorce Horse (who came highly recommended). Super Drugs were the local Baltimore band added to this bill. This was my make-up date and opportunity to exercise my Ottobar Season Pass since this was the first day of use. Yeah, this thing gets me into ANY show save for those rare exceptions listed in the events calendar! I shot this show from the balcony after successfully shooting L.S. Dunes from the same spot. This time, I sat at the end of the bench and extended myself outward so I could position my phone to capture the full-length of the stage. From Super Drugs to Hammered Hulls, lighting got considerably darker. If you've watched my videos before, you know that means my phone gets challenged and starts churning video that gets fuzzy because the phone tries to make up for what it can't capture clearly in darkness through some form of digital fill-ins. The end result is some kind of sub-SD quality footage. When I shoot, I don't see this--it's usually in post I see the end result. But my end goal is to shoot, process and save so regardless of the end result, I've got a record. That's my mission and even if I don't have a perfect product, at least I have one, right? So this is my end result. I was lucky in that the first band got the brightest lighting before it got incrementally darker for the next two bands. If anything, I was psyched to record a local Baltimore band and give them another YouTube presence online. I stuck to a minimal equipment set-up consisting of my iPhone, case with threaded lens attachment options + wide-angle lens and my Shure MV88 mic with lightning extender. With three bands, I usually bring my battery bank to charge inbetween sets but I was fortunate enough to record the whole evening with a fully charged phone. I was lucky in that Super Drugs set was only 25 minutes which gave me enough juice for the night. Super Drugs opened with Clear Channel for Hammered Hulls this night.
