Space weather refers to disturbances in the near-Earth environment caused by solar activity such as solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and solar energetic particle (SEP) events. These phenomena can disrupt critical aviation systems, including HF communications, GNSS navigation, ADS-B/ADS-C surveillance, and CPDLC/datalink communications. Severe events may also affect aircraft avionics, increase crew radiation exposure at high altitudes, and disrupt ground infrastructure supporting air navigation services. While impacts are strongest at high latitudes and altitudes, severe geomagnetic storms can extend into mid-latitudes, potentially causing communication loss, degraded navigation accuracy, increased crew workload, and large-scale operational disruptions. The IATA Safety Risk Assessment shown in this video provides a structured approach for aviation stakeholders to understand and assess Space Weather and Spectrum Interference risks, identify potential threats, and evaluate whether existing safety controls are sufficient or if additional mitigation measures are needed.
