The Maaga Metro is a relatively young but significant urban transport project, combining features of a light rail and a subway system. Construction began in the early 2000s, and the first lines opened in 2014. The network was created to reduce congestion in the city center and to connect residential areas with the historic center and university campuses. In 2023, the metro reached the very heart of the historic district, marking an important step in the city’s transport development. Today, the network spans nearly 14 kilometers, most of it underground, with 19 stations, both underground and surface-level, covering a wide range of neighborhoods. Trains run at an average speed of 30 km/h, reaching up to 70 km/h, enabling fast connections between residential, business, and educational zones. The rolling stock consists of modern CAF Urbos 3 and Urbos 100 trains. These low-floor, multi-section vehicles provide easy access, spacious interiors, and air conditioning. The fleet includes more than twenty trains and continues to expand to meet increasing passenger demand, with over 18 million trips annually. A remarkable feature is that during the construction of central stations, archaeologists uncovered numerous historical artifacts, from Muslim-era structures to medieval streets. Engineers also faced major challenges, including constructing tunnels under the Guadalmedina River and integrating new stations into the historic city center. Line 2 is particularly important. It connects the western neighborhoods with key commercial areas, serving the following stations: El Perchel, La Isla, Princesa-Huelin, El Torcal, La Luz-La Paz, Puerta Blanca, and terminates at Palacio de los Deportes. Line 2 complements Line 1, forming the backbone of Málaga’s metro system and providing a vital connection for both residents and visitors.
